According to official documents, the project will create a more pedestrian-friendly environment with enhanced greenery and accessibility.

Sants Square Transformation Creates Unified Public Space

The comprehensive Sants Square transformation will merge two currently separated sections into a single, cohesive area. Furthermore, the redesign will better integrate the square with Plaça de Sants metro station, which handles over 46,000 daily journeys across L1 and L5 lines. The project aims to soften the urban landscape through curved pathways and improved sightlines, consequently encouraging more social interaction.

Accessibility improvements form a central component of the Sants Square transformation. Existing level changes, obstacles and steps will be eliminated entirely. Instead, gentle slopes and continuous paved surfaces will create barrier-free movement throughout the space. Additionally, new lighting will enhance both visibility and perceived safety during evening hours.

Meanwhile, the metro station itself will receive significant upgrades including new lifts and escalators. These improvements will particularly benefit the L5 line accessibility works already underway. The station modifications represent a €16.6 million investment partly funded by FEDER resources.

Green infrastructure will see substantial enhancement during the Sants Square transformation. The number of trees will increase from 50 to 72 specimens, with careful preservation of existing beloved trees including the prominent tipuana near the kiosk. New shrub planting will reinforce shaded areas and create cooler microclimates during Barcelona’s warmer months.

The children’s play area will expand considerably under the Sants Square transformation plans. New shared-play equipment will be complemented by additional street furniture arranged in curved formations to facilitate social gathering. Importantly, existing sculptures including ‘La font del vell’ and ‘El ciclista’ will be retained though repositioned within the new layout.

Transport integration represents another key aspect of the Sants Square transformation. Cyclists will move to road-level circulation, sharing bus lanes as already occurs on the Carretera de Sants. The H10 bus route will extend through the square, providing better access to the local market and neighborhood heart. Moreover, Bicing stations will be relocated to cluster public transport options more effectively.

The Sants Square transformation will proceed in coordination with metro station improvements currently scheduled for completion within two and a half years. This careful timing ensures that the square’s redevelopment aligns with upgraded underground facilities. The final result will deliver a significantly improved public realm that better serves both residents and the thousands of daily commuters passing through this vital Barcelona interchange.
