A pioneering new recycling point has opened its doors in Barcelona’s Poblenou neighbourhood, showcasing a modular, energy-self-sufficient design that aims to blend seamlessly into the urban landscape. The facility represents a significant step in the city’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in waste management.

Located in Plaza Julio González in the Sant Martí district, the new ‘Punt Verd de Barrio’ (Neighbourhood Green Point) is the first of its kind. Barcelona City Council has invested €448,492.89 in the project, which, it says, reinforces its strategy for developing a circular economy – a model focussed on eliminating waste and continually reusing resources.
A New Model for Urban Recycling
The innovative design is intended to be a versatile solution for urban waste collection. According to the city’s official announcement, this new family of recycling points comes in four different configurations, allowing them to be adapted to the specific space, topography, and needs of each location.
The Poblenou facility uses three functional, repurposed shipping containers, allowing for quick and flexible assembly with minimal environmental impact. Covering a total area of 73 square metres, it features a green outer ‘skin’ designed to soften its visual presence and integrate it into the plaza’s environment. The structure is built entirely with recycled materials and low-impact construction criteria.
Inside, it houses a 21.25 m² public service and reception area and a 29.05 m² storage space for collected materials. While connected to the main electricity, water, and sanitation grids, the facility is distinguished by its self-sufficiency, thanks to rooftop photovoltaic panels that generate the power required for its daily operations.
What You Can and Can’t Recycle
The new Punt Verd offers residents a convenient place to dispose of household items that cannot be left in street-side containers. The service is free and operates from Monday to Saturday, between 8:30 AM and 2:00 PM, and from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM. It is closed on public holidays.
- Reusable items: Clothes, footwear, ink and toner cartridges.
- Recyclable items: Small electrical appliances, CDs/DVDs, cooking oil, and coffee capsules. The city has recently expanded its collection efforts, including a new scheme for old phones and cava bottles.
- Special waste: Batteries, fluorescent tubes, paints, solvents, and old X-rays.
However, the facility does not accept bulky items like furniture, organic food waste, infectious medical waste, construction rubble, or industrial waste.
Network-Wide Changes
The opening is part of a wider reorganisation of the city’s waste management infrastructure, which currently includes 134 Punts Verds of various types.
This new permanent site replaces the provisional recycling point previously located at Calle de Carmen Amaya, 10. In a related move, the Mobile Punt Verd (PVM) that served the Poblenou market will be relocated to the corner of Calle Lope de Vega and Camí Antic de València.
Meanwhile, work is also progressing on a new large-scale Punt Verd de Zona (PVZ) in Montjuïc, an area that has recently been the focus of safety concerns among local residents. The facility is moving from Carrer del Foc to Carrer de Motors as part of a major reorganisation of the Zona Franca. It will continue to offer free services to individuals while being specially designed to handle waste from the commercial and service sectors, which often face some of the highest waste fees in Spain. The new Montjuïc site will also feature a multi-purpose space for environmental awareness activities like workshops and talks.
This modular, self-sufficient model pioneered in Poblenou demonstrates how functional architecture can merge with landscape integration, setting a new benchmark for Barcelona’s public utility infrastructure.
