Pyromaniac arrest details have emerged after a 63-year-old man was caught in the act setting fire to containers in Barcelona’s Nou Barris district.

The arrest, made on 4 December by the Guardia Urbana and Mossos d’Esquadra, followed a targeted surveillance operation after a spike in similar incidents across several neighbourhoods.

Authorities had been monitoring the suspect for weeks, having identified him through his repeated presence in areas where container fires had occurred.

Consequently, during the afternoon of 4 December, officers observed the man on Passeig de Valldaura. They watched as he ignited two adjacent containers, causing a fire that spread to several parked vehicles.

Pyromaniac Arrest Follows Pattern of Deliberate Fires

During a subsequent search, police confiscated items linked to arson: an aluminium foil wrapper containing incendiary paraffin tablets, a lighter, and a mask. The investigation reveals the suspect followed a consistent pattern. He would approach paper and cardboard containers, check they were full, and then use paraffin tablets to start a fire before leaving as soon as smoke appeared.

Furthermore, beyond the fire he was caught starting, the investigation attributes three additional container blazes to the man. Police are continuing to work on determining if he is connected to other incidents. This comes amid a noted increase in container fires in the districts of Horta-Guinardó, Gràcia, and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi in recent months.

In fact, police estimate the detained individual could be linked to around thirty similar fires over the last three months, though these connections must still be confirmed through the ongoing investigation. The damage from the incidents already attributed to him exceeds €2,500.

The 63-year-old, who has two prior police records, was placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities on 7 December 2025. This case highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and property damage in the city. Meanwhile, local business owners have recently cited security as a primary concern, reflecting broader community issues.

According to the official report from El Periódico, the successful operation demonstrates coordinated police work to address serial offences. The pyromaniac arrest serves as a significant development in tackling a spate of deliberate fires that have affected multiple Barcelona districts.
