A major Barcelona police operation has led to the arrest of 71 individuals. These suspects possess a combined total of 314 prior criminal records. This widespread security crackdown across the metropolitan area addresses rising concerns. Indeed, the latest Barcelona crime statistics show a high prevalence of incidents.
The Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police force, launched the sweep. This action is part of the strategic “Plan Kanpai”, designed to target multi-recidivism. Therefore, it focuses on offenders who repeatedly commit crimes like theft and robbery. This initiative tackles a stark pattern of repeat offending in Catalonia. In this region, a small number of individuals are responsible for a large volume of criminal activity.

Crackdown Across the Metropolis
The Barcelona police operation took place over a focused 12-hour period. It ran from 3:00 pm on Friday until 3:00 am on Saturday. Officers were deployed not just in the Catalan capital, but throughout the wider metropolitan belt.
According to police reports, interventions occurred in Barcelona city and several surrounding municipalities. These included:
- L’Hospitalet de Llobregat
- Badalona
- Santa Coloma de Gramenet
- Cornellà
- Esplugues
- El Prat de Llobregat (including the airport)
- Sant Just Desvern
- Sant Adrià de Besòs
High Volume of Infractions
Beyond the 71 arrests, officers opened criminal investigations into a further 38 individuals. Consequently, the scale of the operation also resulted in numerous administrative penalties.
Police filed 131 administrative complaints for offences. These included disobedience and drug possession. Additionally, there were 61 traffic-related violations. Approximately 40 local establishments were inspected. During these inspections, police detected various regulatory infractions. This regional focus follows a recent major police operation against the Trinitarios gang. It highlights ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks.
Transport Network Targeted
A significant portion of the Barcelona police operation focused on the metropolitan public transport network. This area is a common hotspot for pickpocketing and petty crime. During the sweep, officers and inspectors issued 656 complaints. These were against passengers for travelling without valid tickets.
