Dozens of demonstrators from Barcelona’s northern districts brought traffic to a standstill where the highway meets Avinguda Meridiana, demanding immediate action to address what they describe as an escalating healthcare emergency.

Growing Anger Over Barcelona Health Crisis

Protesters displayed banners with messages including ‘Not enough doctors and it’s not the workers’ fault’ and ‘Health is not a business’. The demonstration, which began around 7pm, forced the Catalan Traffic Service to open the high-occupancy vehicle lane to all traffic to ease congestion. Furthermore, residents and neighbourhood associations from Ciutat Meridiana, Torre Baró, Can Cuiàs and Vallbona have been complaining since July about insufficient staff at the primary care centre.

They argue that unfilled vacancies following retirements and medical leave have created unsustainable conditions in one of Barcelona’s lowest-income areas. Consequently, waiting lists continue to grow while basic healthcare services deteriorate. Community representatives warn that these resource gaps ‘put the entire community’s health at risk’ and demand the centre return to its full operational capacity of 14 doctors.

The Catalan Health Institute has responded by temporarily assigning staff from other medical centres to support Ciutat Meridiana CAP. Meanwhile, the institute has conducted candidate interviews offering temporary contracts to fill the vacant positions, though residents say these measures fall short of addressing the systemic issues affecting Barcelona’s most vulnerable neighbourhoods.

This protest highlights broader concerns about healthcare accessibility across Catalonia. The ongoing Barcelona health crisis in northern districts reflects similar challenges faced by communities throughout the region, where recent administrative improvements have yet to translate into better frontline medical services for residents.
