Barcelona is dealing with traffic and public transport disruption today, 9 June, as teachers and municipal workers protest in the city centre. The action is affecting Avinguda Diagonal, Plaça Espanya and several bus routes.

The first protest began at 09:00, called by the Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT). Teachers blocked Avinguda Diagonal near Zona Universitària and were due to move along the sea-facing side of the avenue towards Plaça Francesc Macià. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) said bus stops were cancelled for lines V5, 7, 33, 63, 67, 78 and 175 in the affected section.

A larger joint protest involving teachers and municipal workers started at 11:00 from Plaça Espanya. The march is due to finish in front of the Parliament of Catalonia, in Parc de la Ciutadella, after following Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes to Plaça Tetuán and then Passeig de Sant Joan.

According to La Intersindical, striking workers from Social Services, Libraries, Oficines d'Atenció Ciutadana (OAC), Feminisms departments and Nursery Schools are taking part in the concentration. The protest is against a collective agreement approved by the Barcelona City Council.

The agreement was previously negotiated and accepted by the unions Central Sindical Independiente y de Funcionarios (CSIF), Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT). The dispute reflects ongoing tension between city employees and the municipal administration over working conditions and benefits.

Residents and commuters in central Barcelona should expect delays and diversions through the day. For live transport updates, check TMB and the Barcelona City Council. You can also follow local community updates on our Community page and Sport page for other city coverage.
