Barcelona’s provincial council has approved a €20 million programme to save historic buildings across the province that are falling into disrepair. The restoration plan, which runs until 2027, aims to tackle heritage sites at risk from time, poor maintenance, and in some cases institutional neglect.

The initiative echoes advice given back in 1914 by Jeroni Martorell, the first head of the province’s Monument Services. He said it would be ideal not to have to restore buildings at all, but instead to preserve them through constant care. More than a century later, that guidance still holds true.

Right now, numerous heritage buildings across Barcelona province face serious deterioration. However, the new programme from the Barcelona Provincial Council (DIBA) represents a major effort to protect these valuable sites through structured restoration and guaranteed funding through 2027.

The plan marks a significant investment in preserving the province’s architectural legacy. Meanwhile, it acknowledges that many buildings have suffered from years of insufficient upkeep, which has put them at risk of permanent damage or loss.
