La Sagrera tree root controversy has finally been resolved after months of community complaints about an oversized tree basin causing pedestrian hazards.
The impressive 10-metre tall common medlar tree on Honduras Street had become both a neighbourhood landmark and a source of frustration for local residents.
Neighbours had raised repeated concerns about the tree’s unusually large root basin, which occupied approximately four square metres of pavement space.

Furthermore, the situation had become particularly problematic for elderly residents who found navigating the narrowed pavement challenging.
La Sagrera Tree Root Solution Restores Pedestrian Access
The Barcelona City Council technical services finally intervened last September after mounting pressure from the community. Residents had documented their concerns in the local neighbourhood association publication, warning that the situation could lead to “falls or other incidents” if not addressed promptly.
Council workers have now levelled the area and filled the space with cobblestones, installing a small fence to demarcate the root zone. Consequently, the pavement has gained nearly three metres of usable space, dramatically improving pedestrian flow.
A local renovation company situated opposite the tree described the transformation as “enorme” (enormous). Employees noted that the changes have significantly improved safety along a street predominantly used by elderly residents.
This resolution demonstrates how community advocacy can drive urban improvements across Barcelona’s neighbourhoods. The common medlar tree, originally from Asia but well-adapted to Mediterranean climates, continues to provide shade while no longer posing a tripping hazard.
According to Tot Barcelona’s original report, the tree’s root system had lifted pavement tiles to such an extent that technical services had to repeatedly remove fallen sections. The successful intervention shows how Barcelona balances preserving urban greenery with maintaining accessible public spaces.
