The initiative, announced by Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet, aims to improve safety while accommodating the 30% of private vehicle journeys currently made by motorcycle in Barcelona.
Furthermore, the city council has established a new Motorcycle Observatory to coordinate these efforts. This collaborative body brings together the Barcelona City Council, industry association Anesdor, advocacy group Motoristas por Barcelona, and traffic accident prevention organisations.

Barcelona Motorcycle Parking Safety Improvements
The expansion includes 48 new advanced motorcycle zones in Eixample’s main streets, adding to the existing 52 locations. These designated areas positioned ahead of traffic lights allow motorcycles to move ahead of other vehicles, consequently reducing accident risks at intersections.
Meanwhile, the parking strategy focuses on moving motorcycles off pavements and onto road spaces. The council aims to create 24,000 additional free motorcycle parking spaces by 2030, with 20,000 located directly on roadways. Currently, Barcelona offers 91,000 free motorcycle parking spaces on roads, with plans to increase this to 131,000.
Additionally, the new Motorcycle Observatory will generate proposals for reducing motorcycle accidents and managing parking more effectively. The body will also address the energy transition and decarbonisation of two-wheeled vehicles, working toward implementing agreed measures across the city.
Deputy Mayor Bonet emphasised that pedestrian safety remains the primary concern in all motorcycle infrastructure planning. “Barcelona is one of the European capitals with the highest motorcycle presence,” she stated during the observatory’s launch. “We will work jointly with entities to implement measures that respond to the real needs of people moving by motorcycle in the city.”
The motorcycle infrastructure improvements come alongside other sustainable transport initiatives transforming Barcelona’s mobility landscape. Therefore, these coordinated efforts represent a comprehensive approach to urban transportation management.
Consequently, Barcelona motorcycle parking enhancements form part of the city’s broader commitment to safer, more organised urban mobility. The planned changes reflect growing recognition of motorcycles’ role in Barcelona’s transport ecosystem while prioritising safety for all road users.
