Five Barcelona neighbourhood associations are calling for the restoration of the medieval Torre del Fang, a city-owned heritage site in Sant Andreu and Sant Martí. They have called a protest party for 30 May at 11:00 to press for action on the building, which has been out of use for more than 12 years.
The groups, Torrent de la Guineu-Navas, La Sagrera, Sant Martí de Provençals, El Clot Camp de l'Arpa and Provençals La Verneda, made their appeal on social media. They want the building recovered as, in their words, a dignified space for the neighbourhoods, without further decline.
Torre del Fang dates from the 13th century and is protected as a Local Cultural Interest Asset. Residents say its current state of neglect is at odds with its value to the area, especially as a landmark shared by the two districts.
The building was occupied in 2019 and later suffered a fire, which added to the damage. Local groups have been asking for rehabilitation for years, but the site remains outside the planned reurbanisation around the future AVE station in La Sagrera.
Neighbourhood associations have already drawn up a plan for the site. Between 2015 and 2019, a working group proposed restoring Torre del Fang as the Casa del Parque, with urban gardens and vineyards outside, an interpretation centre on rural life in Sant Martí de Provençals, and an activity centre on the second floor to support the future Linear Park planned by Ajuntament de Barcelona.
Municipal sources said a year ago that no work is planned during the current mandate, so any rehabilitation is likely to wait until at least 2027. For more Barcelona community updates, see our Community coverage and Sport stories.
