Rambla restaurants are demanding urgent clarity about their terrace futures as Barcelona’s iconic boulevard undergoes its controversial €50 million renovation.
The Barcelona Restaurant Guild has broken what it calls “the false consensus” surrounding the remodelling project, warning that the human element that gives Las Ramblas its unique character could be lost forever.

Furthermore, the organisation’s director emphasised that “caring for Las Ramblas means caring for the ramblistas – guaranteeing the continuity of people and businesses that have been there for decades.” The human heritage, he argued, is what makes the boulevard unique and gives it identity.
The guild is now pressing Mayor Jaume Collboni’s administration to clarify whether it will implement the “drastic” 2018 proposal to significantly reduce outdoor seating. Consequently, restaurateurs have been seeking specific details about municipal plans for two years, arguing their recovery from construction-related losses depends on this information.

Regarding terrace aesthetics, the guild proposes adopting the Rambla Catalunya model, which they say simply maximises possibilities already permitted under current regulations. These businesses face terrace permit denials while others maintain outdoor seating despite the 2016 Special Rambla Organisation Plan prohibition.
