Barcelona commuters using Rodalies R2Sud and Regional trains are back to full service through the Garraf tunnels, after repairs finished a week ahead of schedule. The line between Garraf and Sitges has returned to double-track operation, improving links along the coast.
The works began on 15 March and were carried out after winter storms worsened damage to the route. Crews spent more than 3 million euros repairing the artificial tunnel 96 bis, reinforcing the foundations at the bridge over Aiguadolç cove, strengthening the Garraf viaduct, and restoring the underpass at Sant Honorat street in Sitges.
Rodalies said regular service would return progressively, and the alternative road transport plan for Regional trains stayed in place for the rest of Monday. The reopening should cut journey times and improve reliability on a line used by passengers travelling between Barcelona, Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú.
There is still criticism from the Rodalies users' platform Dignitat a les Vies, which said journey times are still far from normal because of Temporary Speed Limitations on the route. The group also said the R15 service remains partial and insufficient, with passengers still needing to change trains between Móra la Nova and Riba-roja d'Ebre in Tarragona province.
In a separate disruption, the high-speed line between Camp de Tarragona and Sants Station in Barcelona reopened after 16:10, following a fire near railway infrastructure. Renfe said the fire had been extinguished and that high-speed services would gradually return to normal.
