A Barcelona school will have to wait at least five more years to move out of temporary portacabins, despite promises that new facilities were coming soon. Institut-Escola 30 Passos, located in the Sant Antoni neighbourhood, has been operating from prefabricated classrooms since it opened. Meanwhile, the permanent school building won’t be ready until 2030 at the earliest.

The delays have left families and teachers frustrated. “It causes a lot of frustration,” said one parent representative. The school community had hoped to move into proper facilities much sooner, but bureaucratic delays and planning issues have pushed the timeline back repeatedly.

Sant Antoni’s growing population means the area desperately needs permanent school facilities. However, the portacabins will remain in place whilst the city council works through the complex planning and construction process. The temporary classrooms, whilst functional, don’t offer the same quality of space as a purpose-built school would provide.

Barcelona faces ongoing challenges with school infrastructure across several neighbourhoods. Many schools operate from temporary facilities whilst waiting for permanent buildings, and the delays often stretch far beyond initial estimates. For Institut-Escola 30 Passos, the wait continues until at least the end of the decade.
