The funding will create approximately 640 new social rental properties across nine developments throughout the city by 2030.

Mayor Jaume Collboni and EIB Vice President Ioannis Tsakiris formalised the agreement through Barcelona’s Municipal Housing and Rehabilitation Institute (IMHAB). This substantial investment represents a significant step forward in addressing the city’s housing challenges.

The construction projects will begin progressively between 2026 and 2028, with completion expected throughout 2029 and 2030. Consequently, approximately 2,040 residents will benefit from these new affordable homes.

Furthermore, all developments will feature high energy efficiency standards, aligning with Barcelona’s sustainability goals. The council has identified specific locations for the new housing, including CAP Fort Pienc (64 homes), Casernes de Sant Andreu (69 homes), and Trinitat Nova (83 homes).

Additional sites comprise Illa Nubiola 22@ (85 homes), Teatre Talia (54 homes), and Casetes Encarnació (15 homes). The Bon Pastor area will receive two developments totalling 188 homes, while the Antiga Clínica Quirón will provide 83 properties.

Meanwhile, Mayor Collboni emphasised that this collaboration is “fundamental to guaranteeing the right to remain in Barcelona.” The initiative builds on his previous statements about boosting affordable housing supply while maintaining rent regulation.

The EIB vice president highlighted Barcelona’s dynamic nature and rapid housing needs growth. “With this project,” Tsakiris stated, “we ensure more people, particularly women and vulnerable families, have access to affordable and energy-efficient homes.”

This substantial investment comes as Barcelona housing costs continue to challenge residents, making such social housing initiatives increasingly crucial for maintaining the city’s social fabric.

The Barcelona City Council continues to prioritise affordable housing as a key component of urban development strategy. This EIB partnership demonstrates the international recognition of Barcelona’s approach to tackling housing accessibility.
