Barcelona electric buses will receive a significant boost with 19 new vehicles from Chinese manufacturer BYD joining the fleet by late 2026.

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) announced the €17.2 million contract this week, marking another step in the city’s transition toward zero-emission public transport.
The new 18-metre articulated buses will accommodate up to 120 passengers each. Furthermore, they will replace older vehicles that have reached the end of their operational life. TMB president Laia Bonet emphasised that “this award represents another step in TMB’s commitment to sustainable mobility and the growth of our zero-emission bus fleet.”
Barcelona Electric Buses Demonstrate Enhanced Performance
The BYD vehicles feature Nelec de Castrosua bodywork and underwent rigorous testing before selection. Consequently, they proved capable of operating for hours under the most demanding conditions. With 684 kWh battery capacity, these Barcelona electric buses demonstrated reliability even during peak occupancy, extreme temperatures, and challenging routes.
TMB highlighted that the batteries are both lighter and more reliable than previous models. Additionally, the manufacturer had to pass specific autonomy tests to ensure consistent performance. This commitment to quality ensures that Barcelona electric buses maintain service standards while reducing environmental impact.
The Barcelona transport authority continues to expand its sustainable fleet. Currently, 25% of urban buses already operate with zero emissions, including 46 hydrogen vehicles and 202 fully electric buses. Therefore, these new additions will further accelerate the city’s green transition.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona has recently introduced seven new sustainable buses in Baix Llobregat. This parallel development demonstrates the region-wide commitment to cleaner transport solutions. The coordinated approach ensures that environmental benefits extend beyond city boundaries.
