Barcelona senior centres in Ciutat Vella are receiving a significant €4.5 million investment to enhance services and combat social isolation among elderly residents.

The Barcelona City Council announced the funding package this weekend, targeting five community centres that serve the district’s substantial older population.
This substantial investment will create new professional roles including service coordinators, sociocultural animators, and concierge staff. Furthermore, the funding will expand workshops, social gatherings, and cultural excursions specifically designed for senior citizens.

According to third deputy mayor and district councillor Albert Batlle, this initiative aims to “offer varied activities to older people and involve them in programming activities and designing cultural and recreational programming.” The investment comes at a critical time, as Ciutat Vella faces significant challenges with elderly isolation.
Statistical data reveals that one in five Ciutat Vella residents is over 65 years old, with approximately 20,300 people in this age category. Moreover, a concerning 38.2% of residents over 75 live alone across the district’s four neighbourhoods.
The beneficiary centres include Casc Antic, Josep Trueta, Josep Tarradellas, Pati Llimona, and Mediterrània. These facilities will see substantial improvements in their activity offerings, including more social gatherings, increased cultural outings, and greater participation in programming through the Ciutat Vella Environmental Classroom.
This initiative aligns with broader municipal efforts to improve quality of life across Barcelona’s districts. Meanwhile, the council continues to address urban challenges through various programmes, including recent record budget preparations for 2026 that signal continued investment in community services.
