Barcelona recently marked the 25th anniversary of Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s novel, ‘The Shadow of the Wind’. An immersive experience at the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau transformed the historic site into the mysterious ‘Cemetery of Forgotten Books’. This event brought the acclaimed author’s literary universe to life for a select group of fans, journalists, and influencers. Immersive Journey into Zafón’s World
Grupo 62, the novel’s publisher, organised this unique event. They also released a new edition of ‘The Shadow of the Wind’ for younger readers. Approximately 60 participants engaged in an interactive story, guided by the cemetery’s enigmatic keeper. Visitors solved challenges and reflected on their relationship with literature. They explored the art nouveau complex, uncovering narrative fragments of a cursed author. Participants worked in six teams, using tablets to answer questions about characters, novel excerpts, and the site’s historical features. The experience also evoked Barcelona’s postwar past. It highlighted themes of silence, memory, and forgotten stories, which run throughout Zafón’s work.
Emili Rosales, Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s editor, described both the game and the new edition as “a tribute to books and reading”. He called the ‘Cemetery of Forgotten Books’ an “iconic” space within Zafón’s literary world. Rosales emphasised the initiative’s goal. It aimed to rekindle the joy of reading Zafón’s works. It also honoured the author’s enduring legacy.
Unveiling the New Edition
The story reached its darkest point in the underground corridors of Sant Pau. There, the keeper revealed the final pieces of the cursed author’s tale. This moment granted participants access to the cemetery itself. The experience concluded with the unveiling of the new edition’s first copy. It reinforced the saga’s central idea: in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, readers do not choose books; books choose their readers. This concept resonates deeply with fans of the series.
Rosales highlighted the novel’s lasting impact. Twenty-five years after publication, it remains one of the most-read works originally in Spanish. It ranks second only to Cervantes’ ‘Don Quixote’. Publishers have translated ‘The Shadow of the Wind’ into over 50 languages. It continues to see reissues worldwide, cementing its global appeal and cultural significance.
