Barcelona shops open on Sunday for the first time this festive season, marking the official start of the Christmas shopping campaign.

This Sunday, 30 November, is the first public holiday where a new law permits, but does not mandate, the opening of shops and shopping centres across the entire city.

Consequently, this kicks off a remarkable 47-day stretch of trading, with the only closures being on 1 and 6 January.

Furthermore, the Christmas campaign will seamlessly connect with the first weekend of the winter sales, which this year falls on 10 and 11 January. During this extended period, all city shops can open without the usual restrictions that apply between 15 May and 15 September. Those summer rules limit openings to establishments within designated tourist areas.

Barcelona Shops Open with Extended Holiday Hours

This change means major shopping centres like Westfield La Maquinista and Som Multiespai will also be open on these designated days. Additionally, unlike the summer tourist period regulated by Barcelona City Council, there is no restricted opening window from 12:00 to 20:00. Therefore, shops can operate according to their standard business hours.

Today’s openings also come with the lingering effects of Black Friday, a promotion some retailers are extending into Monday. The schedule of open Sundays and holidays, approved by the regional government, is designed to boost seasonal commerce. The full list includes: Sunday 30 November, Saturday 6 December, Sunday 7 December, Monday 8 December (a holiday chosen by Barcelona’s council), Sunday 14 December, Sunday 21 December, Sunday 28 December, Sunday 4 January, and Sunday 11 January.

This significant shift in retail hours is part of a broader transformation of the city’s commercial routine. Meanwhile, the council advises residents to plan for increased city mobility on these busy shopping days. Using public transport is highly recommended where possible.

For those who must drive, it is worth checking which establishments offer parking facilities. Some provide free hours, while others are pay-to-use.
