Barcelona solar initiative is now providing renewable power to a hundred local households through a pioneering shared energy scheme.
The city council has launched a new service allowing residents within 1,000 metres of two municipal photovoltaic pergolas to access solar energy for a flat annual fee of €70.
Approximately 60 consumers near the Ronda de Dalt pergola in Horta-Guinardó and 40 near the Plaza Alfonso Comín structure in Gràcia are already participating.

Consequently, they receive an average of 500W of renewable power for self-consumption, which could cover up to 20% of a typical household’s energy needs.
How Barcelona’s Solar Initiative Delivers Savings
This innovative programme offers significant financial benefits. According to the council, participants could save between €90 and €120 annually on their electricity bills, depending on market prices. Furthermore, vulnerable households receive the service completely free of charge.
The initiative forms a key part of Barcelona’s broader climate strategy. Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet stated the service “positions Barcelona as a leading city in shared self-consumption” and advances the objectives of the city’s Climate Plan. The council will evaluate this pilot scheme before potentially expanding it to other areas.
Each installation has substantial capacity. The Ronda de Dalt pergola has an installed power of 43.25 kWp, generating an estimated 43,250 kWh per year. Meanwhile, the Gràcia structure provides 22.72 kWp, producing around 22,720 kWh annually. A portion of this power is also reserved for municipal supplies in the surrounding areas.
The Barcelona City Council emphasises that this project aims to accelerate the city’s energy transition. The Local Energy Agency provides advice to beneficiaries to ensure they make rational and useful use of the shared energy and can monitor their household consumption.
This Barcelona solar initiative represents a practical step towards developing local energy communities. The service has a maximum duration of four years, providing a stable, affordable green energy source for participants. It demonstrates how municipal infrastructure can be leveraged to benefit citizens directly while promoting sustainability.
Ultimately, the council hopes this project will raise awareness about efficient energy use. As Barcelona continues to implement its climate policies, this shared solar scheme could serve as a model for other urban areas seeking to democratise access to renewable power and strengthen community resilience.
