Christmas might be two months away, but Barcelona’s Christmas lights are already going up. Portal de l’Àngel and surrounding streets got their decorations this week.

The lights won’t actually switch on until late November. Residents and tourists will have to wait until after the famous Passeig de Gràcia lighting ceremony. However, crews are installing everything now to meet the deadline.
This year brings five new bespoke designs to central Barcelona. Plaça Catalunya, Carrer Aragó, Gran Via and Passeig de Sant Joan will all feature unique lighting schemes created specifically for the city.
For the first time ever, Via Laietana will join the festive display. The street only just finished its three-year renovation project.
The city council’s bumped up the budget by 15% compared to last year. Total spending now sits at £3.2 million for the 2025 season.
That extra cash means 16km more of Barcelona Christmas lights. The total network will stretch across 125 kilometres this year.
Rambla Catalunya returns to the illuminated streets list. Meanwhile, Plaça Urquinaona, Avinguda Paral·lel and Passeig de Sant Joan will all light up again.
The Passeig de Sant Joan display covers the stretch between Avinguda de Vilanova and Gran Via. It’s been part of the city’s official lighting scheme since 2023.
Ronda de Sant Pere and Carrer de Balmes are sticking with previous years’ designs. Why change something that works?
The council will flip the switch in late November. This year marks Via Laietana’s debut in the festive lighting programme.
