A Barcelona storm alert is now in effect, triggering immediate beach closures across the city. Consequently, the City Council has activated the Municipal Basic Emergency Plan due to dangerous sea conditions. Forecasts predict waves will exceed 2.5 metres. This alert is part of a wider weather event, known as Storm Harry in Catalonia, which is bringing severe conditions to the region.

Authorities have prohibited bathing at all city beaches to ensure public safety. The emergency protocol, known officially as the Basic Municipal Emergency Plan for poor sea conditions, moves into the alert phase whenever there is a high probability of waves threatening the coastline or causing damage to beach facilities.

Emergency Measures for the Barcelona Storm Alert

The City Council has advised all citizens to exercise extreme caution and avoid coastal areas while the alert remains active. Therefore, access to breakwaters and areas where waves break is strictly prohibited to prevent accidents. These physical restrictions are complemented by other safety initiatives, such as the recent installation of surveillance cameras on Barcelona’s beaches.

Officers from the Guardia Urbana (Urban Guard) have deployed along the seafront to enforce these restrictions. They are currently blocking entry points to breakwaters and monitoring the shoreline to minimise risks to pedestrians and curious onlookers. The City Council confirmed these measures on social media, emphasising that the red flag indicates a total ban on entering the water. Meanwhile, the deployment of city services during such alerts reflects a growing trend, as highlighted in the recent Catalan firefighters’ annual report.

Storm Alert Forecast: Conditions to Persist

The current weather episode, which began on Saturday, is being driven by a significant storm system affecting the Catalan coast. Both the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) have issued warnings regarding the rough seas.

Meteorologists expect the instability to continue through to Wednesday. In addition, the forecast predicts not only high waves but also intense wind gusts and periods of heavy rainfall. Officials state that the emergency measures will remain in place until conditions improve enough to guarantee the safety of beachgoers.
