The Barcelona City Council announced the 10-year contracts this week, representing a significant increase from previous arrangements.
The new agreements cover maintenance and advertising rights for the city’s extensive network of public infrastructure. Furthermore, the contracts include four additional optional years, providing long-term stability for both the council and the successful bidders.
Barcelona Street Advertising Modernisation Plans
French company JCDecaux secured the contract for managing 4,600 elements of street furniture, with 2,058 featuring advertising space. Their winning bid of €24 million annually substantially exceeded the €13.5 million minimum requirement set in the tender documents.

Additionally, the contract mandates €1 million yearly for maintenance and includes an extra €11.5 million investment during the first three years. This funding will accelerate the digital transformation of Barcelona’s advertising infrastructure while improving passenger information systems.
The investment programme will replace 250 paper advertising spaces and 30 municipal notice boards with digital versions. Meanwhile, 768 bus stop information panels will be upgraded, with 80 new installations planned across the city.
Clear Channel successfully retained the contract for Barcelona’s 276 press kiosks, excluding those along La Rambla. The company will maintain 728 advertising spaces across these installations, offering €3.7 million annually – well above the €2.03 million initial requirement.
This substantial investment in Barcelona street advertising demonstrates the city’s ability to leverage public assets for significant financial returns. The contracts represent a major step in urban modernisation while ensuring essential maintenance of street furniture continues uninterrupted.
Barcelona street advertising contracts now stand as one of the municipality’s most valuable commercial partnerships, setting new standards for public-private cooperation in urban management.
