Barcelona street syringes have tripled in collection numbers over three years, reaching nearly 70,000 units in 2024 according to official Public Health Agency data.

Official statistics show 67,720 syringes were collected from public spaces last year, marking a dramatic increase from the 23,606 recorded during 2021’s COVID lockdowns.

Furthermore, the trend has shown consistent annual growth since that low point, with 2022 reaching 50,279 units and 2023 climbing to 66,494.

Ciutat Vella accounts for the overwhelming majority of cases, with 51,984 syringes collected – representing over three-quarters of the city’s total. Meanwhile, Sant Martí emerges as the second most affected district with 10,560 syringes retrieved. Other areas show considerably lower numbers, with Sants-Montjuïc recording 3,149 and Nou Barris just 1,033.
