Over 2,800 secondary school students from Catalonia attended the 9th Fisibado event at Barcelona's Tibidabo Amusement Park on 13 May, engaging in hands-on physics and mathematics experiments. This annual programme allows young people to apply scientific knowledge directly to the park's attractions.

Barcelona Serveis Municipals (BSM) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-Barcelona Tech (UPC) organised the event. It forms part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programme, which aims to promote scientific vocations among young people, according to a BSM statement. Once at the park, students divided into groups. Students of Engineering Physics from UPC directed these groups, guiding participants through various experiments.

Applying Science to Thrills

Participants used the park's rides to study scientific principles. For example, on the Merlí free-fall attraction, they analysed vertical motion and calculated acceleration. On the Muntanya Russa roller coaster, students investigated changes in energy and speed throughout the ride.

A Decade of Scientific Engagement

This year's event brings the total number of participants to over 12,000 students since Fisibado started in 2012. The programme has also received recognition, including the National Research Award in the Scientific Communication category. Tibidabo Amusement Park, a historic Barcelona landmark, provides a unique setting for this educational initiative.

Fostering Future Talent

The collaboration between Barcelona Serveis Municipals (BSM), which manages Tibidabo, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is important for the city. It helps foster a new generation of scientists and engineers in Catalonia. This focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programme education prepares young people for future careers. These fields are critical for Barcelona's economic development and innovation.

The continued success of Fisibado highlights Barcelona's commitment to science education. Programmes like this are critical for inspiring future talent in vital scientific and technical fields across the region.
