Barcelona Sunday shopping hours have been significantly extended across the city’s major commercial zones for the festive period.
This expansion, permitted under the Special Tourist Areas (ZGAT) regulations, allows stores to open every Sunday from 30 November until 28 December, including the public holiday on Monday 8 December.

Major Centres Adopt Extended Barcelona Sunday Shopping Hours
Numerous prominent shopping destinations are participating in the extended schedule. Key locations include Arenas de Barcelona, El Corte Inglés at Plaza Catalunya, Diagonal, and Francesc Macià, alongside La Maquinista, Westfield Glòries, L’illa Diagonal, and Diagonal Mar. Furthermore, many high-street stores in central areas such as Portal de l’Àngel, Passeig de Gràcia, and Rambla Catalunya will also open from 10:00 to 21:00.
Additionally, centres located slightly further from the city core, like Màgic Badalona, Mataró Parc, and Splau in Cornellà, will follow the same Sunday opening pattern. Operating hours for most large centres are typically from 09:00 to 21:00, aligning with standard winter schedules.
The policy represents a notable shift from previous rules, which generally limited shops to opening on just ten Sundays or public holidays annually. Meanwhile, the city continues to balance commercial activity with quality of life, as seen in other urban initiatives like the recent €2 million playground renovation project aimed at improving local amenities.
Authorities have emphasised that while opening is permitted, companies must still guarantee weekly rest for employees and establish fair shift rotations. Sunday working must not be imposed as obligatory, ensuring staff welfare is protected during the busier retail period. This development in retail access is part of a broader context of economic activity in the region, where Barcelona employment has seen a significant 4.11% jump in key metro areas.
