Barcelona transport card T-4 users face a crucial deadline as the paper version of this discounted travel pass is being phased out entirely.

According to a report from El Periódico, the final day to purchase the cardboard T-4 card was 28 October 2025.

Consequently, any cards bought before that date will remain valid only until 31 December 2025.

Barcelona Transport Card T-4 Moves to Digital-Only Format

This significant change means the T-4, which offers ten journeys at a special rate of €2.15, will now be available exclusively in digital format. The pass must be loaded onto the new T-metropolitana ‘Tarjeta rosa reducida’. This is a single-person ticket reserved for individuals who hold the Metropolitan Pink Card for reduced fares.

The T-4 permits integrated travel across the TMB metro and bus network, excluding special services and the Barcelona Bus Turístic. Furthermore, it is valid on AMB metropolitan bus lines, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) services within the metropolitan fare area, and the Tram. It also works at the L9 Sud airport stations T1 and T2.

Users must always carry the T-4 alongside their DNI or other identification and their Metropolitan Pink Card for reduced fares. This rule does not apply if the T-4 is loaded onto the new T-metropolitana card.

Integration with the New T-Metropolitana System

With this transition, the T-4 integrates into the T-metropolitana system. This is a plastic, contactless technology card similar to the T-mobilitat. There are three main modalities available: the standard T-metropolitana, the reduced-fare T-metropolitana (the new home for the T-4), and the free T-metropolitana.

The conditions for accessing these cards remain unchanged. Eligible individuals must be registered in any municipality within the Barcelona metropolitan area and meet specific requirements related to age, disability, or large family status.

The AMB emphasises that both the T-4 and the various T-metropolitana cards are personal and non-transferable titles. Therefore, during an inspection, identity must always be verified with a DNI or NIE. This digital shift aligns with broader modernisation efforts across the city’s infrastructure, mirroring other major projects like the ongoing upgrades to the Barcelona metro system.

Passengers holding the old cardboard T-4 are urged to plan their switch to the digital T-metropolitana card well before the 31 December expiry. This proactive approach will ensure uninterrupted access to discounted public transport across the metropolitan network.
