Metropolitan Barcelona taxi drivers are requesting authorities implement an approximate 7% general fare increase next year. Élite Taxi, the sector’s primary Catalan association, will present this proposal today as negotiations commence with the Metropolitan Taxi Institute. The profession cites rising operational costs, particularly insurance premiums, as justification for this adjustment.

Association representatives describe the proposed increase as “moderate and coherent” while emphasising its necessity for maintaining service viability. This follows last year’s approximate 4.7% fare adjustment. The current proposal demonstrates nuanced pricing strategies beyond the baseline increase.

Élite Taxi’s plan includes fare reductions up to 5% for essential services like medical transport. Conversely, it proposes premium fares up to 20% higher during high-demand periods. These surge pricing mechanisms aim to incentivise driver availability in nightlife districts during weekend evenings when traditional black and yellow vehicles become scarce.

The proposal further suggests restructured metering with higher initial rates for the first five kilometres or fifteen minutes of journeys. Therefore, these strategic fare modifications seek to balance affordability with service reliability across Barcelona’s metropolitan area.
