Barcelona taxi fares will rise by an average of 2.3% throughout the metropolitan area in 2026 following approval by the Metropolitan Council of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.
The decision, confirmed on November 25th, received support from major political parties while Junts per Tian abstained and Vox voted against the measure.
This marks a significant reduction compared to the 4.7% increase implemented during 2025.

Barcelona Taxi Fares Face Sector Opposition
Despite the relatively modest increase, the main taxi union Élite Taxi has announced a general strike across Catalonia for Tuesday, December 9th. The union describes this as a “historic mobilisation” that will affect airports, train stations, bus stations and services throughout the territory.
The protest is scheduled to run from 10:00 to 16:00, with preparations beginning at 09:00 when taxi drivers will occupy Gran Via from Plaça Tetuan to Carrer Entença. Additionally, the mobilisation will extend to Passeig de Gràcia, from Rosselló to Plaça Catalunya.
According to recent transport disruption patterns, such protests can significantly impact city mobility. The planned action follows similar patterns of transport-related demonstrations that have affected key Barcelona thoroughfares in recent months.
The new Barcelona taxi fares will apply to all 10,521 licenses within the IMET’s operational area. However, the final approval still requires authorisation from the Generalitat’s Price Commission, which typically reviews such metropolitan decisions.
As with previous years, the actual fare variation will differ depending on the specific tariff type and its components: initial flag drop, kilometre rate and time-based charges. Consequently, some journeys may see slightly higher or lower increases than the 2.3% average.
The Barcelona taxi fare adjustment comes amid ongoing discussions about urban mobility and transportation costs. Meanwhile, other transport initiatives continue to develop, including plans for the metro to connect directly with the Design Museum by 2026, offering alternative travel options for residents and visitors.
