Around six million taxi journeys annually in Barcelona now use fixed fares.

The Rise of Fixed Barcelona Taxi Fares

The Institut Metropolità del Taxi (IMET) provided these figures. They show that approximately 10% of all taxi services in the Barcelona metropolitan area use this payment method. However, the T-3 fare, available through mobile applications, facilitates this system.

There are rules. When passengers choose a fixed price, the taximeter must display zero throughout the process. However, the minimum fare for T-3 is eight euros. This includes the process to the passenger and five minutes of waiting time.

How Fixed Taxi Fares Are Calculated

The fixed taxi fare is calculated by adding the initial flag-down rate. Additionally, the cost per kilometre, based on the process’s length. The price per minute, factoring in real-time traffic conditions, are included.

Uber, Free Now, Taxi Catalana, Taximés, Taxi QGat, and Taxi Ecològic are among the companies offering this service. Taxi drivers can work for both traditional taxi firms and VTC companies, but they must inform IMET. Therefore, they can combine metered journeys with fixed-price trips.

Differing Opinions on Fixed Taxi Fares

Uber believes fixed pricing is an unstoppable trend that benefits everyone. Passengers know the cost upfront. However, this eliminates uncertainty.

However, Tito Álvarez from Élite Taxi disagrees. He says taximeters are still more cost-effective for passengers. However, according to Álvarez, fixed prices rely on Google Maps data. But that data doesn’t account for bus/taxi lane usage.

Despite these concerns, Uber states that over 700 of its 2,000+ drivers in the Barcelona metropolitan area have adopted fixed fares within the last ten months. Therefore, the trend appears to be growing.
