Plaza del Sol terraces in Barcelona’s Gràcia district have secured a significant legal victory allowing extended opening hours starting this Friday.

A Barcelona court has provisionally lifted the early closure restrictions imposed in 2022, meaning the area’s bars and restaurants can now operate until 1am on weekends like the rest of the city.
Plaza del Sol terraces return to standard Barcelona hours
The Barcelona Restaurants Guild successfully argued that the early closures caused economic damage to local businesses.

Furthermore, they maintained that noise issues stemmed from other sources like street drinking and public disorder rather than terrace operations. Consequently, the court ruled in their favour pending a final decision from Catalonia’s High Court.
City authorities had implemented the restrictions to address noise pollution and protect residents’ quality of life. However, the court found insufficient evidence that terrace noise exceeded legal limits when measured according to proper procedures. The ruling represents another chapter in Barcelona’s ongoing neighbourhood tensions between hospitality businesses and local residents.
Starting this Friday, the dozen terraces in Plaza del Sol can operate until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 1am on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves. Previously, they faced earlier closures at 11pm during summer and midnight in winter. The Guild’s director, Roger Pallarols, celebrated the decision while emphasising their commitment to working with authorities on noise reduction strategies.
This case follows similar successful challenges in Ciutat Vella last December, where extended hours were also restored. The hospitality sector continues to advocate for uniform city-wide opening times they consider appropriate for Barcelona’s Mediterranean character. Meanwhile, the council maintains the restrictions remain necessary for preserving neighbourhood tranquillity.
The provisional ruling will stand until Catalonia’s High Court issues a final verdict on the matter. This development highlights the complex balance between urban vitality and residential wellbeing in Barcelona’s popular neighbourhoods. The Plaza del Sol terraces case continues to test how the city manages its famous nightlife while addressing legitimate community concerns.
