The International Cycling Union (UCI) has awarded Barcelona the organisation of the MTB Eliminator World Championship 2026. The event will take place on 18 April around the Font de Montjuïc, bringing elite mountain biking to the heart of the city.

Sports councillor David Escudé celebrated the announcement, saying Barcelona will be ‘the world capital of cycling’ during 2026. The city will also host the Tour de France start that year. “All cycling lovers are in for a treat because we’ll get to enjoy the best international stars right here at home, proving Barcelona and cycling make a great partnership,” Escudé said.
Cross Country Eliminator (XCE) is known for its spectacular format. Short circuits combine artificial obstacles with urban features, creating explosive races where bike-handling skills are crucial. Spectators can watch completely free as riders compete in qualification rounds, then face off in groups of four, with the two fastest advancing until the world’s best rider emerges.
The event marks another major sporting coup for Barcelona, which continues building its reputation as a premier destination for international competitions. The open format and central location should draw large crowds to Montjuïc, whilst showcasing the city to a global cycling audience.
