Barcelona will host Southern Europe’s largest coworking facility following a €15 million investment announced by municipal authorities. The 8,500-square-metre space in the 22@ innovation district will accommodate approximately 1,200 professionals when it opens in late 2025.

The Development Plan

City planners confirmed the project will transform a former industrial warehouse in Poblenou into a state-of-the-art work environment. According to development documents, the facility will include dedicated areas for technology startups, creative industries, and research institutions. Additionally, it will feature event spaces capable of hosting up to 300 people for professional conferences and networking events.

The council’s economic development department indicated the project forms part of Barcelona’s broader strategy to strengthen its position as a Mediterranean innovation hub. This initiative aligns with recent efforts to enhance the city’s commercial infrastructure, as seen in the Barcelona Finance Cluster’s financial hub development. Construction will begin in early 2025 following the completion of technical studies currently underway.

Economic Implications

Economic analysts project the coworking space could generate up to 350 permanent jobs and attract significant international investment. However, some business associations have raised concerns about infrastructure pressures in the already densely developed 22@ area. Meanwhile, the regional government has pledged support through training programmes and digital innovation grants.

This development occurs alongside growing demand for flexible workspace solutions across Catalonia. Recent data from the Catalan Business Observatory shows coworking membership has increased by 42% since 2022. The new facility’s management consortium includes partners from Barcelona Activa and private sector operators with extensive experience in workspace innovation.

The project team will present detailed operational plans to district committees in November 2024. Final approval depends on environmental impact assessments and transport infrastructure evaluations currently being conducted by metropolitan authorities. If approved, construction would represent one of Southern Europe’s most significant workplace infrastructure investments in the past decade.
