Barcelona is set to ignite with cycling fever as the city prepares to launch the 100-day countdown to the 2026 Tour de France with a grand public celebration. On Thursday, 26 March, the city will bathe iconic landmarks in yellow light, marking the final stretch before Barcelona hosts the coveted Grand Départ of the world’s most prestigious cycling race.

The city council has organised a free festival on Passeig Lluís Companys, starting at 6:00 PM. This event is designed as an open invitation for all residents to share in the excitement. It signals a key milestone in the city’s preparations to welcome the Tour de France, an undertaking that involves significant logistical planning and investment in local infrastructure, as Barna.News previously reported.

A Festival of Cycling

The celebration aims to be a family-friendly affair, combining sport, music, and institutional recognition. The Barcelona City Council announced the evening will feature a range of cycling-related activities. These include dedicated circuits and games for children, promoting the bicycle as a tool for sustainable and healthy mobility.

Two symbolic moments will anchor the festivities. First, the city will officially activate a large digital clock, beginning the 100-day countdown to the race start on 4 July 2026. Following this, several of Barcelona’s most emblematic buildings will glow in the iconic yellow of the Tour de France leader’s jersey, a visual spectacle intended to bring the spirit of the race into the city’s public spaces.

An Historic Opportunity

Top officials are expected to attend the event, including Barcelona’s Mayor, Jaume Collboni, and Christian Prudhomme, General Director of the Tour de France. David Escudé, the city’s Councillor for Sports, emphasised the moment’s significance in statements to La Vanguardia.

“Barcelona has a great cycling tradition, and hosting the start of the Tour is a historic opportunity to share it with the world,” said Escudé. “We want this celebration to be a great citizen party, open and participatory, that shows the pride and enthusiasm of our city for a sporting event that will place us at the centre of the international stage.”

Honouring a Century of Cycling

A central part of the ceremony will pay homage to the city’s deep-rooted cycling heritage. The council will formally recognise several historic cycling clubs that have kept the sport alive in Barcelona for over a century. The honoured clubs include Sport Ciclista Català (founded in 1912), Agrupació Ciclista Montjuïc (1917), Unió Esportiva de Sants (1922), and Club Ciclista de Gràcia (1929).

This tribute connects the global sporting event to the local fabric of neighbourhoods like Sants and Gràcia. These areas are themselves undergoing transformations, including street redesigns in Sants-Montjuïc and public square revamps in Gràcia, all aimed at improving public life.

The Sound of the Grand Départ

The celebration will also feature a major cultural reveal: the official song of the Grand Départ Barcelona 2026. As Barna.News announced, the city commissioned Catalan band Doctor Prats to create an energetic and festive anthem. This song captures Barcelona’s vibrant, Mediterranean spirit and will serve as the soundtrack for the months leading up to the race.

To cap off the evening, Doctor Prats will perform a short live concert, premiering the new anthem and transforming Passeig Lluís Companys into a collective celebration. The city hopes this event will galvanise public excitement for what promises to be an unforgettable summer of sport, as the first three stages of the 2026 Tour de France will take place entirely on Catalan soil.
