Commuters using Barcelona’s tram network this Tuesday, 10 February, should plan for a midday service interruption. This Barcelona tram disruption will partially suspend operations on the T4 line. Municipal crews must address a uniquely local safety hazard: heavy parrot nests.
Service Disruption Details
The service cut is scheduled from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. During this three-hour window, there will be no trams running between the Glòries and El Maresme stops on Line T4, which runs along Avinguda Diagonal.

Therefore, the disruption is required so that the Municipal Institute of Parks and Gardens (Institut Municipal de Parcs i Jardins de Barcelona) can safely access the trees lining the tracks. The maintenance teams will be removing large nests built by the city’s population of monk parakeets (cotorras).
A Preventive Measure
These invasive parakeets are known for building massive communal nests. These nests often weigh dozens of kilograms. If situated precariously above the tram lines or overhead power cables (catenary), they pose a significant risk of falling.
According to TRAM sources, the operation is purely preventive. Meanwhile, there has been no record of accidents caused by falling “mega-nests” on the tram network to date. However, the removal is necessary to ensure the continued safety of passengers and pedestrians.
Alternative Routes
To mitigate the impact on passengers, TRAM will implement the following measures during the affected hours:
- Line T6 Reinforcement: Frequency will be increased on Line T6, which runs parallel to the T4 along the Gran Via, connecting Glòries to Estació de Sant Adrià.
- Remaining T4 Service: Trams will continue to run normally on the city-centre section of Line T4, between Glòries and Verdaguer.
