The Ciutat de Granada pedestrianisation marks a major step in Barcelona’s infrastructure overhaul. Consequently, one key street near Plaça de les Glòries is now permanently closed to traffic. This project is a crucial component of the ongoing transformation of Plaça de les Glòries.
This closure, affecting the stretch between Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Avinguda Diagonal, is essential for the Trambesòs network expansion. Therefore, works will integrate the future tram route along the Diagonal, connecting the city’s lines into a unified system. Moreover, this phase builds upon the recent successful Diagonal tram extension.

Tram Works and Urban Transformation Timeline
Preliminary work began on 15 January, initiating the permanent removal of general traffic. According to Barcelona City Council, the pedestrianisation is necessary to install new services, the tram platform, and the catenary system along the Diagonal.
The engineering plan dictates that tram tracks from Gran Via will turn towards the Diagonal via Ciutat de Granada. This manoeuvre is critical for completing the connection between various tram lines. However, access to the Glòries shopping centre car park remains operational, ensuring minimal disruption.
Traffic Disruptions and New Route Guidance
As construction expands, drivers face new restrictions. On the sea-side of Avinguda Diagonal, two traffic lanes have closed between Ciutat de Granada and Carrer de Badajoz, leaving only one lane open.
To mitigate congestion towards the Besòs area, traffic direction has reversed on Ciutat de Granada between Diagonal and Carrer de Bolívia. Therefore, drivers should now follow the route: Badajoz – Bolívia – Ciutat de Granada – Diagonal.
Cyclists will also see changes. As works move to the central boulevard, current bike lanes on the edges will be affected. Meanwhile, a provisional bidirectional bike lane is being established on the mountain-side lane to maintain cycling mobility.
Project Budget and Completion Forecast
This major urbanisation project is a joint effort by Barcelona City Council and the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM). With a €32.54 million budget, it aims to expand the tram network and improve pedestrian connectivity between Glòries and the Diagonal. Furthermore, this focus on walkability aligns with Barcelona’s broader pedestrian-first urban strategy.
Residents and commuters should expect works to continue. The current forecast schedules completion for spring 2027.
