Barcelona’s Trambesòs network is set for major disruption from July, with lines T5 and T6 affected until spring 2027. The work is centred on Glòries and Gran Via, where the tram tracks will be doubled and the route changed.
For readers in Barcelona, the key point is that line T4 will return to normal service in September, but T5 and T6 will remain altered for much longer. The city council is preparing an alternative transport plan to reduce the impact on daily travel.
From July until September, all three lines, T4, T5 and T6, will be fully suspended in the affected section. After that, T4 will resume service, while T5 and T6 will continue on a new route from Glòries.
Instead of turning onto Gran Via, T5 and T6 will continue along the sea-facing side of the Diagonal, following the same stretch as T4. From there, they will turn onto Ciutat de Granada street and then rejoin Gran Via. The change will also create an intersection with T4 across the central promenade of the Diagonal.
The main aim is to remove the single-track bottleneck now shared by T5 and T6 between Glòries and Poblenou. Officials say the project should cut tram crossing times in the area by one-third, while also allowing for reurbanisation of the sea-facing side of Gran Via.
The total budget is €32.5 million. Barcelona City Council is contributing €23.3 million for the urbanisation and route change, while the Catalan Government, through the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM), is providing €9.2 million for the track doubling. Comsa and FCC are carrying out the work. The Public Transport Promotion association has raised concerns that the sharp turn on Ciutat de Granada could force trams to slow down and add time to journeys. The first phase will focus on the space between Glòries square and the Diagonal on the Besòs side during the summer. The longer and more complex track work on Gran Via is due to continue until spring 2027. Residents and commuters using T5 and T6 should expect long-term changes and use the alternative transport options set out by the city council.
