Barcelona’s Trinitat Nova neighbourhood in Nou Barris is set to get a turtle-shaped playground, part of a €2.5 million project led by the Barcelona City Council. Work is due to start this autumn on the site between Chafarinas, Tamariu and Palamós streets, with completion expected by September 2027.
The scheme was co-designed with local schoolchildren and is meant to improve both play and public space. More than 1,000 children in the area are expected to benefit directly from the new facility, which also includes a full remodelling of the surrounding area.
Sara Belbeida, councillor for the Pla de Barris, said the project reflects the programme’s approach of listening to the neighbourhood and bringing children into city building. She said it is also about creating more opportunities for gathering, coexistence and quality play in Trinitat Nova.
The idea began after Mayor Jaume Collboni visited Institut Escola Trinitat Nova in 2024. There, 42 fifth-grade pupils presented ideas for improving their neighbourhood, including a park with a large turtle play feature, and gave the mayor a drawing of their vision.
Those same students, now in their first year of ESO, later helped develop the proposal through a co-creation process led by the Pla de Barris at their school. The final plan includes more vegetation, better accessibility, a refreshment games area and shaded spaces near the metro exit. The turtle structure itself will have different levels, accessible ground and first-floor areas, a transfer platform, a sandpit, musical games and a semi-shaded cover.
The project is designed to make the area safer, more comfortable and more useful for local families. For more Barcelona neighbourhood coverage, see our Community and Sport pages.
