Barcelona City Council has opened a new children’s play area in the Turó de la Peira neighbourhood, part of a wider initiative to create safer, more welcoming public spaces around schools.

The project, situated near the Amor de Dios school at the junction of Travau and Canfranc streets in Nou Barris, forms part of the city’s pla de barris (neighbourhood plan). Although some final touches remain—such as planting trees—the playground is now ready for use.

Work began in February, with an investment of €900,000. Beyond adding play equipment, the redevelopment has widened pavements along Carrer Travau, improving pedestrian safety. New urban furniture has also been installed, with careful attention paid to accessibility, particularly for children with disabilities.

According to district councillor Xavier Marcé, the aim is clear: ‘We want to pacify school environments and win back quality public space that improves the daily life of families and pupils.’

The design was carried out in consultation with the Amor de Dios school community, ensuring that the facilities meet the needs of children, parents and teachers. The initiative reflects Barcelona’s broader commitment to creating more liveable neighbourhoods, where public spaces serve as hubs for community life rather than being dominated by traffic.

For Nou Barris, one of the city’s most densely populated districts, the playground represents not only new swings and climbing frames but also a step towards healthier, safer streets.
