Montjuïc Magic Fountain modernisation continues this winter with a crucial second phase focused on its audio system.
The Barcelona City Council has awarded a €474,000 contract to upgrade the nearly century-old attraction’s sound, ensuring the iconic water and light shows can continue with minimal disruption.

According to official documents, the work will replace all outdated speakers and install new cabling.
Montjuïc Magic Fountain Upgrades To Enhance Visitor Experience
The specialist firm Elecnor, based in Cornellà de Llobregat, will execute the four-month project. Consequently, the fountain’s scheduled Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening performances at 8:00 PM and 8:30 PM will largely remain operational. Municipal sources confirm only “some specific periods” will see temporary suspensions.
This sound system overhaul follows a successful first phase that renovated the control room and lighting. The fountain, which originally operated silently until music was added in 1976, reopened for this year’s La Mercè festivities after drought restrictions lifted. Furthermore, the council aims to complete all works by the second quarter of 2026.
The modernisation is part of a broader programme of improvements across Montjuïc ahead of the 2029 centenary of the International Exposition. This wider transformation includes the significant redevelopment of key public spaces and infrastructure projects. The plaza surrounding the fountain, named after its designer Carles Buïgas, is also slated for a comprehensive redesign.
Therefore, this investment safeguards a cultural landmark that became a televisual centrepiece of the 1992 Olympics and a staple of Barcelona’s New Year celebrations.
