Emergency preparedness kits are becoming essential household items for Barcelona residents according to new guidance from the Generalitat.

The regional government has launched a major campaign urging every household to maintain a ready-to-go emergency backpack containing essential supplies for surviving 72 hours during crises.

Why Emergency Preparedness Kits Matter Now

The campaign’s timing proved remarkably prescient.

Furthermore, officials had originally planned to film the promotional video on April 28th – the exact day when a massive power outage struck the Iberian Peninsula. Consequently, the filming was postponed, but the incident highlighted precisely why such preparation is necessary.

Interior Minister Núria Parlon emphasised that this recommendation shouldn’t be received with alarmism. “We need to have an active attitude to protect ourselves,” she stated. “We must be prepared in the face of risk.”

What Your Emergency Kit Should Contain

The essential emergency kit should enable self-sufficiency for 72 hours, following European Union guidelines. Key items include bottled water (1.5 litres per person daily), a battery-powered radio, flashlight with spare batteries, and long-lasting foods like canned goods.

Additionally, households should include important documentation in waterproof bags, cash, a first-aid kit, spare shoes, waterproof clothing, personal hygiene products, mobile phones with chargers, power banks, and house keys. Meanwhile, families must customise their kits for specific needs including pet supplies and daily medications.

The Catalan government’s alert system improvements, as detailed in recent parliamentary demands, complement this personal preparedness initiative. Therefore, both individual and systemic approaches are being strengthened simultaneously.

Beyond Power Outages: Multiple Threats

Emergency preparedness kits aren’t just for electrical failures. Indeed, they’re increasingly relevant for climate-related risks including wildfires, flash floods, heatwaves, and other emergencies. However, Civil Protection reminds residents that in many situations, the primary instruction is to shelter in place rather than evacuate until authorities advise otherwise.

This household preparedness campaign connects to broader urban safety concerns that Barcelona regularly addresses. The city’s approach to neighbourhood emergency response planning demonstrates how personal and community preparedness work together during crises.

The Generalitat recommends storing emergency kits in accessible locations like home entrances and ensuring all family members know their whereabouts. Ultimately, these emergency preparedness kits represent a practical step toward resilience that every Barcelona household should consider implementing immediately.
