Barcelona water bills will increase by 2.9% across the metropolitan area next year, adding approximately €0.40 to monthly household costs.
The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) approved the tariff adjustment during its November council meeting, citing rising water purchase costs and ongoing drought-related investments as primary drivers.

Consequently, the average family using 100 litres daily per person will see their bimonthly bill rise by about €0.80.
The AMB describes the increase as “moderate” compared to this year’s 6% hike and notes it aligns with future inflation projections. Furthermore, the organisation maintains that essential tariff structures will remain unchanged, including consumption blocks and social assistance programmes. According to recent social service reports, such measures remain crucial for vulnerable households.
Barcelona Water Bills Impact Varies Across Municipalities
Meanwhile, six municipalities outside the main Aigües de Barcelona network face steeper increases ranging from 2.9% to 5.8%. These variations reflect differing water purchase costs from the Aigües Ter-Llobregat supplier. Additionally, drought response investments contribute €0.5 million to the overall €8 million reserve fund for water infrastructure improvements.
The AMB emphasises that social tariffs protecting low-income families will continue unaffected. Therefore, approximately 70,000 households will remain exempt from service charges and initial consumption block fees. The organisation also maintains progressive pricing based on household size, offering reduced rates for families exceeding three members.
In parallel developments, the AMB council approved special urban plans for constructing public housing in Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Cervelló and Sant Adrià de Besòs. This initiative aligns with the broader €15 million Besòs area transformation plan recently announced. The housing projects potentially create 600 public rental homes across five publicly-owned sites.
