Barcelona’s water polo clubs have wrapped up a busy playoff run, with CN Atlètic-Barceloneta taking their 21st consecutive Spanish Men’s Water Polo Division of Honour title. The Barceloneta side beat Sabadell in the final, closing out another season at the top of the domestic game.

The title win was their fourth straight final against the same opponent. It underlines how dominant the Barceloneta club, based in the city’s seafront neighbourhood, has been in Spanish water polo for years.

Elsewhere, the playoffs also decided the last European place. Sant Andreu, Mataró, Rubí and Tenerife Echeyde were in the mix for that spot, and Mataró came through against Sant Andreu in the final match.

Barcelona’s other top-flight sides also had plenty at stake. Sport and community readers will know the local angle well, with CE Mediterrani from Sants and CN Catalunya from Gràcia both fighting to avoid relegation against Encinas Boadilla and Caballa de Ceuta. CN Catalunya stayed up.

The regular season left CE Mediterrani tenth and CN Catalunya eleventh, which set up a Barcelona derby in the relegation playoffs. The Division of Honour season finished with three playoff brackets, one for the title, one for Europe, and one for survival in Spain’s top water polo league.
