The breakthrough came during a dramatic mountain stage of the Vuelta a España in September 2023, when then-city manager Albert Dalmau impressed Tour director Christian Prudhomme by conducting negotiations entirely in French. This pivotal moment capped years of diplomatic efforts that began as early as 2005 under former mayor Joan Clos.
Tour de France Barcelona Journey Began With Dakar Rally
The relationship between Barcelona and Tour organisers ASO actually started with motorsports rather than cycling. Former Dakar Rally competitor Juan Porcar first approached ASO about internationalising events, leading to the Dakar Rally’s Barcelona stop in 2004. Consequently, this established crucial connections that later facilitated cycling discussions. The city subsequently hosted a successful Tour stage in 2009, which first planted the Grand Départ seed.
Barcelona nearly secured the Tour start for 2014 after extensive negotiations during Jordi Hereu’s mayoral term. However, political changes following the 2011 elections saw CiU abandon the project. Leeds ultimately claimed the Grand Départ that had been earmarked for Barcelona, while other European cities including Utrecht, Düsseldorf, and Bilbao hosted starts in subsequent years.

Current Sports Councillor David Escudé estimates the final push required eight years of “talking, travelling, convincing, seducing and promising.” Reconciliation became essential after the 2011 withdrawal strained relations with French organisers. Key figures including Volta a Catalunya director Rubén Peris and Vuelta a España director Javier Guillén helped rebuild bridges during numerous meetings in Paris and at cycling events.
The decisive moment arrived in early 2024 during a dinner hosted by Barcelona Global president Maite Barrera. Mayor Jaume Collboni, though ill, made a brief appearance to personally guarantee Barcelona’s commitment. The city pledged approximately €10 million investment, finally securing the 2026 start dates of July 2-4. This achievement represents another major international sporting event for Barcelona following recent successful projects.
Team presentations will occur between Hospital de Sant Pau and Sagrada Família, showcasing Barcelona’s architectural heritage to global audiences.
