Barcelona Zoo Bioscope, the park’s planned ‘crown jewel’, has launched an international competition to find its architects.
The Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Serveis Municipals (BSM) initiated the search on Friday for the design of this major new attraction, which promises to transform the future of the historic park.

The facility aims to offer an interactive journey into the origin and evolution of species.
BSM will fully finance the €18 million project. Consequently, the organisation is seeking a singular architectural design that reinforces the Bioscope’s core message of conservation and education. The building is slated for completion by 2030.
Barcelona Zoo Bioscope To Feature Immersive Evolution Journey
The Bioscope will be a hybrid space, blending the presence of live species with cutting-edge immersive technology. It will cover approximately 3,000 square metres at the confluence of Wellington and Pujades streets, the current site of the jaguar and Sri Lankan leopard enclosures.
Furthermore, the experience will guide visitors through the history of life using museum-style exhibits. Key evolutionary stages will be linked to specific species and the zoo’s own conservation projects. Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet hailed the competition as “a step forward in transforming the Zoo into a reference space for biodiversity preservation.”
This ambitious project is part of a wider transformation for the zoo. Two additional new areas are also planned: ‘Discover the Mediterranean’, a large zone for regional species, and ‘Isolated’, an immersive experience exploring islands as natural laboratories of evolution. The city continues to invest in major public projects, as seen with the recent significant funding secured for new housing.
According to the original project presentation in October, the goal is to create a landmark building. The Barcelona Zoo Bioscope, therefore, represents a significant shift towards experiential and educational wildlife encounters. This focus on immersive public experiences aligns with other city initiatives, such as the popular drone and classical music shows staged recently.
The architectural competition marks a crucial phase in realising this vision for the future Barcelona Zoo Bioscope. It signals a move from concept to concrete design, setting the stage for a new era at one of the city’s most iconic institutions.
