Barcelona Zoo evolution centre plans will completely transform the visitor experience with a major €18 million investment in new educational spaces.

Mayor Jaume Collboni announced the ambitious project this week, revealing that the zoo’s crown jewel will be Bioscope – an interactive observatory dedicated to species evolution and biodiversity.

The Bioscope building will span approximately 3,000 square metres in the park’s northern section. Furthermore, it will feature unique architecture through an international design competition launching shortly. The facility aims to educate visitors about planetary activism while showcasing ecosystems for fish, reptiles and amphibians.
Additionally, two complementary spaces will complete the transformation by 2030. Aïllats will offer immersive experiences focusing on island ecosystems and conservation projects. Meanwhile, Descobrim la Mediterrània will highlight environmental challenges facing Mediterranean deltas and their threatened species.
Construction will proceed carefully to ensure animal welfare remains paramount throughout the transition period. The zoo management confirms they’re building a special reserve to temporarily house animals during relocation. Consequently, visitors should experience minimal disruption to their zoo visits during the development phase.
The project represents a significant shift toward contemporary conservation education. According to official plans, the Barcelona Zoo evolution centre will establish the facility as a premier educational destination. The multimedia experiences will appeal to all ages while promoting environmental awareness.
By 2027, a new Wellington Street entrance will better integrate the zoo into the Ciutadella del Coneixement project. This initiative aims to transform the entire park area into a knowledge and innovation hub. Therefore, the Barcelona Zoo evolution centre represents just one component of broader urban regeneration plans connecting the Born and Vila Olímpica neighbourhoods.
