Barcelona residents reveal how their city has transformed dramatically over the past quarter-century, with significant improvements in public transport, green spaces and safety.

According to a special report by 20 Minutos, locals shared their perspectives on the Catalan capital’s evolution and remaining challenges.
Barcelona Residents Praise Transport And Safety Improvements
Long-term residents overwhelmingly highlighted public transport as the most significant positive change. Osvaldo, who has lived in Barcelona for two decades, noted that improved transport connections now allow residents to organise their lives more effectively. Furthermore, he observed that security has dramatically improved compared to previous years when thefts were more common.
Maria and José, both retired residents with over 60 years in the city, witnessed the transformation firsthand. “It has grown, now it’s double what it was,” José explained, recalling when La Meridiana was just a small road. Maria particularly emphasised transport improvements that have connected neighbourhoods across the expanding city.
Green Spaces And Quality Of Life Enhancements
Younger residents also recognise the city’s development. Julia Judez, a 21-year-old nursing student, described Barcelona as having “good mobility, food, weather and atmosphere, especially at night.” Although she lives nearer to L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, she appreciates the increased green spaces and dedicated children’s areas created in recent years.
Ian, another 21-year-old student, characterised Barcelona as “very touristy and green” while noting it guarantees all freedoms. He particularly values the enhanced safety, especially during evening hours, which makes the city more accessible for younger residents.
Ongoing Challenges For Barcelona’s Future
Despite these improvements, Barcelona residents identified several pressing issues requiring attention. Housing accessibility emerged as a primary concern, with Leonardo, a 48-year-old reader of 20 Minutos for two decades, hoping the city will find solutions to the accommodation crisis.
Tourism management represents another significant challenge. Julia expressed concern about overcrowding from visitors, hoping future planning will better balance tourist numbers with resident quality of life. Meanwhile, Maria and José noted that some mountainous neighbourhoods like El Carmel and parts of Trinitat Vella feel neglected and require improved security measures.
These resident perspectives come as recent demographic studies show significant population changes in Barcelona. The city continues evolving, balancing its global appeal with the needs of those who call it home.
