Born District Gastronomic showcase brought together over thirty of the neighbourhood’s finest bars, restaurants, and gourmet shops this week, marking a pivotal moment for the area’s hospitality scene.
The event, held at the iconic Santa Caterina Market, was described by chef Iñaki López de Viñaspre as a definitive ‘before and after’ moment.

Consequently, it served as a vibrant call for more Barcelona residents to explore the culinary treasures tucked away in the Born’s historic streets.
Born District Gastronomic Event Marks Culinary Turning Point
The gathering aimed to counter recent challenges faced by the district, including the pandemic’s lingering effects, ongoing works on Via Laietana, and certain negative perceptions about Ciutat Vella. Organisers used the platform to send a clear message to city authorities, including Mayor Jaume Collboni, who was in attendance. They emphasised the need for more visible security and cleanliness measures to support the area’s thriving businesses. This call for support comes at a time when the mayor is navigating complex urban issues, as evidenced by recent political developments affecting his administration.
Salvador Sans, owner of the multi-generational café El Magnífico, highlighted the district’s unique commercial diversity. “There’s hardly another neighbourhood with such a varied commercial offering as this one,” he asserted. The evening featured an extraordinary dinner with more than twenty gastronomic proposals spread across the market stalls. Furthermore, it showcased everything from Mexican ceviche at Oaxaca to Catalan ‘cap i pota’ from Bar Brutal and Bar Super, and even interstellar cocktails from Dr. Stravinsky.
A notable feature of the Born District Gastronomic collective is the significant presence of sibling partnerships. The Vila brothers of Vila Viniteca, the Colombo brothers, and the López de Viñaspre brothers all operate celebrated establishments here. Moreover, this list will expand in February when the starred Torres brothers open a new venture in the same market, reinforcing the area’s culinary prestige. The event, therefore, successfully blended celebration with a serious appeal for sustained civic investment in one of Barcelona’s most culturally rich districts.
