Barcelona’s traditional human tower groups, known as colles castelleres, gathered on Wednesday in Plaça de Sant Jaume to celebrate La Mercè with a spectacular Diada castellera.

The event brought together all the city’s groups, including Castellers de Barcelona, Sants, Vila de Gràcia, Poble Sec, Sagrada Família, Jove de Barcelona, Sarrià and Esquerdats. To the rhythm of traditional gralles and drums, each group took turns to raise their towers in the heart of the Gothic Quarter.
The human towers were part of a packed day of celebrations honouring the city’s patron saint. Festivities also featured the plantada of the city’s iconic giants (Gegants), who performed their traditional dances, alongside a parade of Nans (big-headed figures), the Àliga eagle and other folkloric characters that filled the streets.
The Diada castellera remains one of the highlights of La Mercè, symbolising both community spirit and the endurance of Catalonia’s cultural traditions, with generations of castellers coming together for a unique display of strength and teamwork.
