A recent report by the Spanish Consumers’ and Users’ Organisation (OCU) has crowned a supermarket on Barcelona’s Diagonal Avenue as the cheapest in the entire country. Out of 1,070 establishments analysed across 65 cities, the Alcampo outlet at 462 Diagonal came out on top for low prices.

Unlike the brand’s large hypermarkets, this Alcampo operates as a smaller, urban-format franchise. While it may not excel in areas such as opening hours, store size or cleanliness, its pricing structure makes it unbeatable for bargain hunters in Spain’s major cities.
According to the OCU, families could save up to €1,273 a year by carefully shopping across different supermarkets to chase the best offers. However, not all chains scored equally well in consumer ratings. The Bonpreu and Esclat brands, both part of the Catalan Bonpreu Group, were ranked as the best overall supermarkets in Spain for service, quality and satisfaction. Notably, Bonpreu also led in the category of online supermarkets, followed by Consum and Mercadona.
At the other end of the spectrum, Sánchez Romero in Madrid’s Castelló Street was named the most expensive supermarket in the country. Meanwhile, in southern Spain, the Dani chain, operating mainly in Andalusia, was found to offer the best value overall when considering entire chains.
Barcelona will soon see more competition: the Bonpreu Group is preparing to open its first Esclat supermarket in the city this Christmas, located on Carrer Riera Blanca in the Sants district.
