Diagonal tram extension plans have cleared a critical hurdle as Barcelona’s urban planning commission approved the infrastructure project following intense political negotiations. Mayor Jaume Collboni’s administration secured the necessary support from ERC and Barcelona en Comú to advance the long-awaited connection along the city’s iconic avenue.

The commission voted on Tuesday to approve two essential components: installation of a new collector and urbanisation works for the route where tram lines will eventually run. Consequently, this decision paves the way for the Metropolitan Transport Authority to proceed with track and overhead line installation.
Political Negotiations Behind Diagonal Tram Extension
Furthermore, the voting revealed significant political alignments. Junts, PP and Vox had already announced their opposition, guaranteeing 17 votes against the proposal. Therefore, Collboni’s PSC needed support from both ERC and Barcelona en Comú to achieve the majority required.

ERC confirmed their support despite expressing concerns about the projected 40-month construction timeline. Meanwhile, Barcelona en Comú maintained an uncertain position until the final vote, ultimately supporting the initiative they originally championed during Ada Colau’s first term.
The approval represents a major step forward for Barcelona’s public transport network. Additionally, it demonstrates how cross-party cooperation can deliver significant infrastructure projects that benefit the entire city.
However, challenges remain regarding the construction schedule. Some political groups have expressed dissatisfaction with the projected completion date of 2031. Accordingly, negotiations will continue to explore possibilities for accelerating the timeline while maintaining project quality and safety standards.
The Diagonal tram extension will ultimately create a continuous connection between Sant Joan Avenue and Sarrià Avenue. This development promises to transform urban mobility along one of Barcelona’s most important thoroughfares.
